Ephemeral Beauty – Acrylic on paper – 2016

Ephemeral Beauty mixes my Art history education with the cartoons and coloring books of my youth in a series of painted collages. They visualize a conflict I often experience: I’m humbled by the giants of history, but I also get juvenile satisfaction in tearing up the past.

Using pages torn from Sir E.H. Gombrich’s famous art history compendium ’The Story of Art’ (translated to ‘Eeuwige Schoonheid,’ or ‘Eternal Beauty’ in Dutch), this work stages an interaction between all my heroes: Michelangelo and Inspector Gadget, Rembrandt and Optimus Prime. Each ‘collage’ combines my personal history and childhood passions with the universally acclaimed legacy of mankind’s greatest artists.
